During recent weeks we have started our study of Mesopotamia by looking at the geography of the region and completing a simulation of how irrigation systems were used to control floods. We will continue by talking about the characteristics of early civilizations during which students will create their own mock civilization. From there we will look at the achievements of the earliest known civilization, the Sumerians. Students will construct a museum exhibit outlining the Sumerian's main achievements and start a timeline of the ancient world that will be used for the rest of the year. Our next main writing assignment in Social Studies will focus on Hammurabi's Code of Laws and whether it brought justice to his people. These laws will also be compared to Massachusetts' State Laws for similar crimes, which will allow students to see the differences between ancient and modern justice systems.
During the month of December students also participated in our first Geobee tournament through which we decided on a class champion that will represent us at the school Geobee. We will have several Geobee tournaments during the year and students have a Geobee app on their iPad, which is a great extension activity for anyone looking for a challenge or learn where things are in the world. Please encourage your child to use the app if they have time or are looking for a challenge!
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to e-mail me!
Thank you!
