Welcome to the Math page!
In this section I will be keeping you up to date on our current Math units and the rationale behind them. All curriculum is directly tied to the Common Core Curriculum Frameworks and in preparation for the PARCC/MCAS test as determined by the district. We just finished up our third unit, Let's Be Rational. Throughout this unit students learned strategies to understand estimation as a tool for a variety of situations, develop meanings and algorithms for the four operations, and use variables to represent unknown values and equations to represent relationships. We are starting our fourth unit, Decimal Ops. Our goals for the end of this unit are: 1. To understand estimation as a tool for a variety of situations and develop strategies for estimating results of arithmetic operations, 2. Develop meanings for the four operations and algorithms for decimals, and 3. To understand percents. Decimal Ops is broken down into four different investigations. In investigation 1 students will be focusing on how to make estimations. Students will make estimations to make sure their answers are reasonable. In investigation 2 students will be focusing on addition and subtraction of decimals. Students will be using models and algorithms. In investigation 3 students will be focusing on multiplication and division of decimals. Students will be focusing on models as well as algorithms to develop a deeper understanding of these operations.. Students will learn a new strategy for dividing decimals. Students will convert decimals into fractions and use the common denominator strategy. They will also learn long division. In investigation 4 students will be working with percents. Students will learn how to calculate discounts, sales tax, tip, percent of a number and more real life situations. Students will learn to decide which operation is appropriate in a given situation. After completing this book students will be able to work with decimal operations and how to calculate different percents that we see in the real world. Attached below (in the right bottom corner) is the parent letter for this unit. In the left bottom corner is the same parent letter in Spanish. Within that letter you will be able to find helpful hints on how to help your student with homework. The letter provides you with the key concepts we will be using in this unit as well as specific examples of how your student will be applying those concepts.
